The thalamus, also known as the dorsal thalamus, is an oval gray matter nucleus located on both sides of the third ventricle in the diencephalon. The left and right thalamus are connected by a gray matter mass (known as the middle mass).
The thalamus is the sensory center in animals with underdeveloped cerebral cortex; In animals with well-developed cerebral cortex, it is the most important sensory transmission relay station. The transmission pathways of various sensations throughout the body (excluding smell) replace neurons in the thalamus and then project to the cerebral cortex.
